well even with the timer when the mirror flips it can cause vibration on the tripod. I've always had good results with using a timer (or trigger) in conjunction with the mirror lock up. You can get around this as well by just holding a black piece of paper (plastic,etc) in front of the lens right after the exposure starts ... this will let the camera settle from the mirror vibration and then pull the sheet away and let it capture the exposure. Just gotta be sure to take that second or two into account in the exposure.
